Our Ministries

Let us know how you want to get involved.

Recreation and Fellowship

Dan River provides many opportunities for members to gather as families and individuals.  Our “recreation and fellowship program is designed to provide people in the church and community the opportunity to enjoy the gift of Christian  fellowship.  Throughout the year there are numerous events planned.  Some of the events that have become annual events are the “Love Your Neighbor Banquet”, our “Spring Fling” & Easter Egg Hunt and the annual “Fall Festival”.  These along with many additional events, build a spirit of love and unity here at Dan River that is so important to the strength of any congregation.

Kids and Youth

Dan River provides many opportunities for children to grow in their understanding of God’s love.  These include Sunday School, Children’s Sermons, and Children’s Church all of which take place on Sunday morning.  These events use Bible stories, activities and prayer as teaching tools.  We also encourage children to participate in our Children’s Choir and mission group meetings (Mission Friends & CiAs) which occur each Wednesday night during the school year.

Dan River also provides a wide range of activities for YOUTH to grow closer to God and explore his plan for their lives.  In addition to Sunday School, Youth (grades 6-12) have opportunities to participate in activities throughout the year.  These activities include missions, Bible Study, and dialogue. Watch the bulletins and newsletters for announcements for these activities.

Our youth take an active role in worship by operating the sound/video equipment and occasionally serving as ushers or providing special music.

During the summer youth enjoy mission trips and spiritual growth retreats.  These include Impact Virginia, and a visit to Garden City Retreat in South Carolina.  Dan River youth also participate in activities sponsored by the Dan River Association Youth Council.

Youth (grades 6-12) are invited to join us for any of our youth activities.

Music Ministry

Music has always been a vital part of the worship experience at Dan River.  We offer many opportunities for those who wish to participate in this ministry.

The Adult Choir is open to all adults, regardless of musical ability.  The Adult Choir presents musical selections during each weeks worship service and practices each Wednesday evening at 6:00.  The choir also provides special music throughout the year including Christmas and Easter cantatas, revival music, etc.

Dan River also has a “Hand bell Choir” involving both adults and youth.  This choir generally performs for special occasions.

We have been blessed with many talented musicians who share their skills to enhance the worship of God.  We invite you to join any of these groups as we worship God together.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is an important part of the education ministry of Dan River.  Each year our church provides the opportunity for children and youth to engage in a week long study of the Bible.   Our VBS uses traditional Lifeway (Southern Baptist) material which offers a creative theme approach to teaching the Bible lessons.  Each theme utilizes a wonderful mix of teaching plans, high energy music, imaginative crafts and theme oriented snack ideas which bring excitement to the learning process.

Senior Adults

The Senior Adult Ministry of Dan River is designed to promote fellowship and ministry opportunities among the more mature members of our congregation.  The senior Adult group generally meets on the first Monday of each month in the church fellowship hall for a prepared lunch.  following the meal, a program consisting of different speakers and/or entertainment is provided.  The group also plans other activities such as aiding in the care of our shut-ins, day trips to points of interest within our region, and an occasional over night trip to interesting destinations further away.

Daily Bread Ministry

Dan River is always looking for ways to minister to those in need.  Our “Daily Bread Ministry” provides a hot meal prepared by loving hands on the first Thursday of each month.  These meals are hand delivered to the homes of individuals who are experiencing trying times.  To be a part of this ministry, please contact the church office.

Bible Study

Dan River Baptist Church offers a wide variety of Bible study opportunities for people of all ages.  Traditional Bible Study (Sunday School) Classes are conducted each Sunday morning at 9:45.  Classes are offered for preschoolers, children, youth, and adults.  Preschool through youth age classes are all co-ed and utilize age appropriate Lifeway Baptist Resource material.  Our young adult and middle adult classes are primarily gender mixed while our senior adult classes are generally gender separate.  Adult classes also use Lifeway material and utilize the “King James Version” of the Bible for senior adults and the new Holman “Christian Standard Bible” for younger adults.

Other Bible study opportunities include Wednesday night Prayer/Bible Study each week at 7:00PM led by our pastor.

We strive to make the learning experience here a positive one.  We hope you will join us.  One of our “Greeters” will be glad to direct you to our class rooms.  Should you have questions, please contact the church office at 572-3547, and ask the Sunday School Director to contact you.

Mission Groups

There are mission opportunities for everyone at Dan River!  Our church wants to make a difference for Christ in our families, church, community and in our world.  There is a place for you in one of our groups.
A Baptist Men’s group meets periodically to make plans for mission projects to aid our church and community.  The men also provide a monthly “Mission Night” event which includes a mission program and supper.  “Mission Night” occurs on the third Wednesday night of each month and is open to everyone.

Two ladies groups meet each month; they are the Zelma Woody Group and the Nonie Gravitt Group.  These meetings, usually held at the church, include programs about missions, fervent prayers for missionaries and others, Christian fellowship, mission activities, and delicious refreshments.

One of the primary of our mission organizations is mission education and that happens here every Wednesday night during the school year.  Preschoolers meet from 7:00 to 8:00 for Mission Friends/Music.  Children in Action (CiA) a boys and girls mission group for grades 1-6, also meets from 7:00-8:00 for mission activities and music.

All of these organizations actively participate in church-wide mission activities.  If you would like more information on any of these groups, and how to get involved, please contact the church office.
